Art, Aging and Healing: Working in Health Care and Nursing Home Facilities
The arts have the power to transform and heal. Learn about innovative arts programs from health care providers and professional artists who are offering these programs for patients, people who are aging, caregivers, and staff. Two short films documenting this engaging and powerful work will also be shown. Artists of all disciplines are encouraged to attend this session. Workshop Presenters: Alice Kinsler, M.A., A.T.R, manager of Therapeutic Arts and Activity Services at Concord Hospital; Lucie Crichton, D.Min., chaplain, Havenwood-Heritage Heights Retirement Center; Sarah Haskell, weaver; Beverly Rush, Musician/Certified Music Practitioner.
Governor Lynch Attends Artist-In-Residence Mural Unveiling at Riddle Brick Elementary School in Bedford
Governor John Lynch was on hand Monday, May 11, 2009, for ceremonies and a reception to culminate an Arts in Education residency at Riddle Brick Elementary School in Bedford. N.H. Artists’ Hotline on Brief Hiatus
The New Hampshire Artists’ Hotline, a pilot-project offered to provide information and referrals to artists during trying economic times, is on a brief hiatus and will resume May 29. NEA Names New Chairman
Theatrical producer Rocco Landesman, who brought hits like “Big River,” “Angels in America” and “The Producers” to Broadway, has been nominated as the next chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. The appointment, made by President Barack Obama, must be confirmed by Congress. He will replace poet Dana Gioia, who stepped down in January. Business in the Arts winners named
MANCHESTER – Citizens Bank, Merrimack County Savings Bank, One Washington Center and HippoPress won Business in the Arts Awards at the 25th New Hampshire Business Committee for the Arts awards banquet.
On Monday, May 11, 2009, more than 300 guests attended the gala anniversary celebration of the awards, which featured performances by the Apple Hill String Quartet, Rebecca Rule, the Peacock Players and Average Joes barbershop quartet. Gov. John Lynch attended the event and spoke about support for the arts. Winners received a framed print by New Hampshire artist Elizabeth Mayor of Hanover. Wentworth-by-the-Sea donated a two-night stay as the grand prize in the ArtsBags Cultural Trivia Show.
Citizens Bank was recognized for extensive financial and board service support to many arts organizations statewide. Merrimack County Savings Bank received its award for support of a variety of arts projects in the Concord area, specifically for its support of the Friends Program “Friends Finding Friends” art auction. One Washington Center was recognized for its promotion of the creative economy in renovating its historic building to create a mixed-use space for artists, nonprofits, and small business, and HippoPress was cited for arts coverage.
Visual Artist Selected as 2009 MacDowell Medalist
The MacDowell Colony will present its 50th Edward MacDowell Medal this year to visual artist Kiki Smith. The MacDowell Medal is awarded annually to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to his/her field and this year marks a half-century of recognizing pivotal artists. Smith joins an impressive list of past recipients, including Georgia O’Keeffe, John Updike, I.M. Pei., and Aaron Copland.
The award will be presented in a public ceremony during the Medal Day celebration on Sunday, August 9, 2009, beginning at 12:15 p.m. on the MacDowell Colony grounds in Peterborough, N.H. Novelist, critic, and Colony Fellow Lynne Tillman will be the Medal Day speaker.
Called a “leading figure among artists addressing the philosophical, social, and spiritual aspects of human nature,” Kiki Smith’s career has incorporated sculpture, printmaking, installation, and drawing. Her body of work has covered an equally diverse array of subjects, from the human body and domesticity, to classical mythology and folk tales. Life, death, and resurrection are leitmotifs in much of Smith’s work, and she is widely credited for treating the female form with extraordinary honesty and vulnerability.
After this year’s Medal Day ceremony, colony guests will enjoy picnic lunches on the colony’s grounds, and current MacDowell artists-in-residence will open their studios to the public from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Medal Day, a youth program for families with children ages 7-13 will be offered. There is no charge to attend Medal Day.
